For the benefit of cyclists in Scotland, this is the new Scotrail policy on bikes. It includes breakdown cover!
"If you are unable to complete the bike portion of your journey as a result of an accident, vandalism or an irreparable breakdown to your bike, First ScotRail Cycle Rescue will ensure you and your bike (if appropriate) are transported at our discretion to:
• the nearest suitable cycle repair shop or
• the nearest appropriate railway station or
• the nearest car rental agency or
• the nearest overnight accommodation or
• your home, if nearer"

In practice, this means 2 bikes per carriage....
Note: The east-coast line is more fortunate, as we have ex-Virgin stock: it may break down daily, and take 5 minutes longer that a turbo-star, but it does have a large guards-van section in one engine, so can take loads of bikes
