BTW, it occurred to me that it's a lot cheaper to take a bike on a plane as excess baggage than it is to ship it - did you look at that option?

I didn't think to check that out... but there would be some awkwardness if I tried to manoeuvre a bike, a suitcase, and my laptop rucksack through the London Underground, onto a train, and through Edinburgh.
