I suspect a lot of it comes back to the fundamental core of how we (as people) perceive our level/status in our society (the society we live in/identify with)
For many men, we identify our importance based on the number of people who seek us out for answers, and act upon our advice.
For many women, it's the number of people who seek them out for advice and inclusion - a solution is not required, just an opinion.
So, when a woman asks her husband "What have you done for this family", she's meaning "I've not been involved in anything that you've been involved in discussing, in relation to this family", whereas he thinks "I spend all day doing something I don't enjoy, so that I can provide money for us"
What I (personally) find really interesting is the degree to which people exhibit these tendencies, and the levels of understanding that people have, varies across social groups. Not by age; not (so much) by upbringing; but by the group of people you are with.... and some people change their responses when in different groups

Hopefully seeing this sort of stuff written down will help some people 'improve' or change their attitudes/behaviour. And thus, help themselves.
