Further to [livejournal.com profile] nickys' post here where she suggests popularising the the phrase "A theory so absurd that they probably teach it in Kansas", I would also suggest "except for the wierd sulphur things that live around volcanic vents" as a useful phrase to round off statements.

Actually it would now be the weird sulfur things.

We appear to have adopted stupid American Spelling.

According to the Royal Society we have :( and so that is how it is taught...

(And thus all the new whippersnappers spell it that way). I guess old farts like us will be still using the correct spelling.

Really? How upsetting.

I wonder how much confusion it has actually ever caused? I had an interesting conversation with a linguistics-oriented friend recently - she was downplaying the extent to which consistent spelling actually makes reading easier or faster. Apparently it's overrated.

When I was at uni 1996-2000 it was being phased in, but I refused to use it, and do now. Alas the RSC has decided that it is to be and thus we are doomed.

Dumbing down English for our American colleagues it an awful thing to do; smacks of pity!
