RE: Right-wingers


I'm always bemused by the the green/neo-cons/FoE/etc people who insist that people replace their old oil-burner with the latest, more efficient, car.

They never seem to think of the industrial pollution costs for creating that car (steel-mills to make the raw material; power-stations to power the presses that form the body-panels; fuel burnt by all the workers travelling to the factories that make the cars; all the chemicals used to make the cables/fabrics/paints/glass/etc used in the cars; all the fuel burnt transporting the components from the sub-suppliers to the assembly lines.

Given that people are encouraged to replace their cars ever three years, I consider my 55 year old car pretty damn economic....

Indeed. It should be evolution, not revolution. But the industry won't stand for a "Keep your car as long as possible" campaign!
