Expensive error of judgement

This is an entrance which is only supposed to be used by buses. There's a bollard on a hydraulic ram in the middle of the road which is lowered to let the bus though, then raises after it's passed. This bright spark tried to tailgate a bus through rather than drive round to the car entrance.



Apparently as well as writing off his car he has to pay for the repairs to the system and the aditional security costs involved in keeping the gate manned 24/7 until it's fixed!

There are less heavy-duty versions of that in Cambridge town centre. I think if you get caught you're just going to tear your exhaust off, rip your brake lines loose, and that sort of thing.

People who did this have been known to complain bitterly in the local papers about the unfairness of it all, though.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many drivers seem to think that being held accountable for their own misbehaviour is in some way unfair - eg speed cameras, parking fines, etc. It's not like the rules are all that complex or anything.

I think they should install those bollards on traffic lights to catch people who shoot red lights.

Reminds me of the American tourists in Toronto who followed a streetcar (tram, I think you'd call it in the UK) along its tracks, and kept following it when it headed underground. They were driving a Winnebago, which promptly got stuck in the tunnel. Cost them about $10K to get it out, IIRC.
