I think his major problem there is that tattoos will seem dated once they're no longer fashionable, and he's terrified of not being cool. Mind you, he's not cool now so I'm not sure why he's worried!
I'd have thought he would prefer less tattoed people, but everyone to have thought about their tattoos and for them to have real meaning. Most of the "fashion" tattoos have no meaning beyond "It's cool to have a tattoo and I want to be cool".
If he wants to be taken seriously he should drop the new age bullshit too. Now that makes him look ridiculous.
