does the Windows XP Network Problems troubleshooter refer you to the Online knowledge base when you've already told it that the problem is that you're internet connection isn't working? If it suggested going to another PC with a connection that would at least be a little less infuriating. At least the nice man in Ideal Computing let me use one of their PCs to look the problem up, which gave me a simple registry hack which sorted it out.

Apparently there is a bug that means that when you repair an XP Pro installation, or upgrade from Home to Pro, it loses your internet connections. Which is nice. When I finally got reconnected and hit Windows Update to re-install the service pack and security patches one of the fixes was for this very problem. How I laughed.....
