One worrying thought - does this mean that it's going to be dangerous to play copy-protected CDs and DVDs in a DVD recorder? Not a PC, just the basic VCR replacement package.
I hadn't thought of that - it could be I suppose, but it depends on whether the manufacturers have agreed standards that they can take advantage of. If each brand has a proprietry OS it'd be quite hard for them to do. I suspect not, but as the machines get more sophisticated it could get to be.
I can't remember how to turn autorun off. I think this thing may have already tried to install itself on my machine. Unfortunately it crashed my PC so I don't know if it managed to install properly. I'm currently running one of their scans to see if it finds anything. I think I may need to format my hard disk and start again. It's really not a happy bunny.
In XP, open "My Computer", right-click on the CD drive, click "Properties", then click the "Autoplay" tab.
For each of the selections in the drop-down box, choose "select an action to perform", then click "take no action". After you've done that for everything, click "OK". It should now do nothing whatever disc you insert.
