I'm disappointed that we're some way from land, we'd have to go out in the North Sea to even hit a very small volcanic island.

You just need to go round the other side before you start, then you can be a pacific atoll!

This of course assumes that you can keep digging in a straight line as gravity changes around you, and dig upwards as you come ou the other side... half of the hole is very deep, and the other half (from the digger's perspective) is very high!

Errr... I think it's wrong. It's reflecting in the equator, but it's forgetting to rotate halfway round the world.
